A man marrying a woman ten or fifteen years younger is so normal here it barely gets a comment. The women who do it are not confused. A lot of them want a regular thing with no speeches, not a second husband.
Lehmiller's research is the bit that ruins the gossip. Women more than ten years older than their partners came out the most satisfied, and the most committed, compared with women dating older men and women close in age. If she was desperate and he was just using the body, you'd expect the opposite. Older women often hit their sexual stride later than men. A younger guy has the stamina, she has the patience to tell him where to put his mouth. That combination works better than people who have never tried it want to admit.

There's older nonsense still floating around. A Limpopo study on sugar-mommy pairings picked up the belief that a young man who sleeps with an older woman will wreck his kidneys, or struggle to get a woman pregnant later. People still repeat versions of it. It's the same story as telling a girl she's used up, just aimed at his dick instead of hers. Neither version survives contact with anyone who has actually had the sex.
Alarie interviewed women between 30 and 60 who were sleeping with younger men. Very few of them described themselves as the one doing the chasing. He asked, often more than once, she said yes. The film version where she prowls the gym is there so she stays the problem. In real life he sent the first message, usually a bad one, and she decided if he was worth the trouble. Same pattern in Durban as anywhere else.
People still want a rule for who you're allowed to fuck. Half your age plus seven. A woman of 46 shouldn't look under 30, if you do the sum. It comes from a French etiquette book in 1901, not a study of anyone's sex life. It also gets looser as you get older, which is convenient for the person holding the calculator.
Someone took an Emory University survey and worked out that a 10-year gap meant you were 39% more likely to divorce, and a 20-year gap something like 95%. It turns up on every age-gap list. One American dataset, correlation, and a look at marriages in England and Wales didn't find the same pattern. Couples split over money, kids from the first marriage, one of them wanting a baby and the other done with nappies. Guests can see the age gap, so the age gap gets the blame. They can't see that the sex died three years ago.
Most of these pairings are plainer than the articles. She's 40s or 50s, sometimes past that, often divorced, often not looking for a second husband. He's late 20s or early 30s, often not offering to be one. Sometimes it's a regular thing on a Tuesday after work. Sometimes it's one night and a lift home. If you're going to do it, say what you want before the clothes come off. A fling, a regular fuck, someone who already has a partner at home and needs it kept quiet. Friends can pull a face. Sixteen percent of civil marriages in this country already had the bride as the older one in 2023, and that number doesn't include the ones who never bothered with the ceremony.
